Track Accident: Toshiaki Fushimi Has Died

In an official statement, the Keirin Riders Association announced the death of Toshiaki Fushimi. The champion, born in 1976, passed away following an accident that occurred during a race at the Matsusaka Keirin tournament. Emergency responders arrived immediately after the crash, but unfortunately, there was nothing they could do.

“Toshiaki Fushimi, a member of the Fukushima chapter of the Japan Keirin Federation, died in an accident that occurred during a race at the Matsusaka Velodrome in Mie Prefecture,” the statement reads. For many years, Fushimi was one of Fukushima Prefecture’s leading keirin athletes.”

“Since his debut in 1995, he had amassed an impressive record, including two Keirin Grand Prix victories and a total of five wins in Group 1 races. He also won a silver medal in the team sprint at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was a long-standing leading figure in the world of Japanese keirin.”

“As a member of the Fukushima chapter of the Japan Keirin Federation, his powerful performances in numerous races were beloved by many fans, and his strong, determined riding style, combined with unwavering tenacity, instilled courage and inspiration in many people,” the statement reads.
