Cagliari Transfer Market: Another Push for Elia Caprile; Tommaso Giulini Responds Firmly
Olympique Marseille is on the hunt for a top-tier goalkeeper and continues to closely monitor the Italian transfer market. The French club has long been tracking Michele Di Gregorio, who is no longer part of Luciano Spalletti’s plans at Juventus, but in recent hours they are also reported to have explored the possibility of signing Elia Caprile. The Cagliari goalkeeper, long rumored to be on his way out, is still in Sardinia and remains an attractive prospect even for clubs set to compete in European competitions. Rossoblù president Tommaso Giulini, however, does not seem willing to lower his asking price: with a loan with an option to buy ruled out, it would take around 20 million euros to sign Caprile.
Interest in Caprile is nothing new this summer. The goalkeeper, born in 2001, has attracted the attention of numerous clubs over the past few months, with Aston Villa, Feyenoord, and Paris Saint-Germain among the most serious suitors. Juventus had also been monitoring him for some time as a potential alternative to more expensive options to replace Di Gregorio, while Stuttgart had emerged from Germany, seeking a successor for Alexander Nübel following the German’s return to Bayern Munich. This list of suitors confirms the value of the young goalkeeper from Verona and explains Giulini’s firm stance in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, on the Juventus front, Di Gregorio’s situation appears to be heading toward a swift resolution. In addition to Marseille, which could include midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg—already tracked by Juventus during the last winter transfer window—in the deal, Valencia has also stepped forward in recent hours, reportedly contacting the Bianconeri to inquire about the former Monza player, valued at around 15 million euros. The goalkeeper’s transfer is seen as a prerequisite for finalizing the deal for the new number one, with Juventus having decisively shifted its focus to Juan Musso of Atlético Madrid.
Meanwhile, Cagliari has already taken steps to protect itself in the event of Caprile’s departure. The Sardinian club’s management has identified Verona’s Lorenzo Montipò as the ideal candidate to take over from their starting goalkeeper, valuing his reliability and deep knowledge of the Italian league. However, this deal will face competition from Venice and Turin, both of which are seeking a top-tier goalkeeper for next season. Hellas Verona’s relegation to Serie B has effectively paved the way for Montipò’s transfer, as the player has consistently expressed his desire to remain in the top flight.
