Inter vs. Monza, kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at San Siro, is a match for the first day of the Serie A season. The Nerazzurri begin their title defense in front of their home fans following a positive preseason and a major transfer campaign that brought in Stones, Spence, and Jones, all of whom are expected to start on the bench. The team from Brianza, fresh off a strong victory against Avellino in the Coppa Italia, is in crisis mode without Pessina, Colombo, Ciurria, Akinsanmiro, Toure, and the suspended Thiam and Dany Mota.

Chivu fields the same starting lineup as last season, with the exception of Diouf, who—after an excellent preseason—starts on the right wing (Spence is not yet at his best). Up front, Lautaro Martinez makes the lineup, alongside Pio Esposito (Bonny was in contention, but Thuram is not yet in top form); in midfield are Barella, Calhanoglu, and Zielinski, with Dimarco on the left. In defense, Akanji partners with Bastoni and Bisseck, who edged out Stones for the spot.

The focal point of the red-and-white attack is Varela, who immediately scored twice against Avellino in the Cup. Cutrone and Forson round out the Brianza side’s offensive line, while Ondoa and Mout start in midfield. Birindelli and Mangas man the wings.
