Transfer Market: The List of Top Free Agents Is Endless—Who Can Afford Them?

As always, once the summer transfer window closes, free agents remain the last resort for clubs that haven’t been able to finalize their rosters. This year, in particular, the list of free agents is truly special and includes some very big names.

For those looking for a big name, there’s plenty to choose from: from former Inter striker Icardi to Ballon d’Or winner Benzema (assuming he doesn’t decide to retire). Also intriguing are the names of Brozovic, Sterling, and Sancho—all players with significant talent.

Among the defenders, keep an eye on Alaba, who, at 34, remains an immensely valuable center back. There’s also the ageless Acerbi, a player who, despite being 38, could be a valuable asset to many clubs. In short, there’s truly something for everyone—you just have to step up.

Herein lies the problem. All these players are looking for lucrative contracts, on par with what they were earning at their respective clubs. Who can afford such figures right now, especially in Italy? Practically no one. If they want to play in Serie A—or, more generally, in any European league—each of them will have to put one hand on their heart and the other on their wallet. They need to significantly lower their financial demands to avoid staying on the list of free agents for too long.
