“Federico Chiesa won’t touch the ball again”: another blow following his exclusion from the Champions League

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has definitively buried Federico Chiesa’s career at Liverpool with a scathing remark made on the “Overlap” program. The former Juventus forward was left off the UEFA Champions League roster: after struggling under Arne Slot, the Italian international appears not to have impressed new manager Andoni Iraola either, who has relegated him to the bottom of the Reds’ pecking order.

“Federico Chiesa won’t touch the ball again,” said Carragher, who as a pundit is known for his blunt remarks, just as much as he was for his tough tackles when he was a defender. “Liverpool has two players on the roster who will never take the field. And there are all these squad limits; you can only have 17 players and the rest. They have Chiesa and Endo: it looks like they won’t touch the ball again.”

Unlike Chiesa, the other Italian on the roster, Giovanni Leoni, is on the Champions League roster. The promising center back, who came from Parma, is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, and Andoni Iraola has stated that he should return to training with the team during the international break.

Chiesa, who hasn’t played for Italy since 2024, was linked to several clubs this summer, including Inter, but ultimately remained at Liverpool. Last season, he played 36 games in all competitions for the Reds, though he started just five times—and almost all of those were in cup play.
