F1: Kimi Antonelli Triumphs and Cemented His Reputation at Monza: A Historic Comeback. Hamilton Finishes Sixth; Leclerc’s Disaster

Andrea Kimi Antonelli makes history at Monza: the 20-year-old Mercedes driver, who started from 19th on the grid due to a penalty for changing his power unit, staged a sensational comeback that allowed him to win the Italian Grand Prix.

In front of thousands of ecstatic fans at the Autodromo, Kimi wrote a legendary chapter in Formula 1 history, confirming his current overwhelming dominance and solidifying his lead in the overall standings of a World Championship that he now has firmly in his grasp. No one in the history of the premier class had ever come back from 19th place at Monza. Antonelli also becomes the youngest driver to triumph at the Autodromo, at the age of 20: he is the first Italian on the top step of the podium since Scarfiotti (1966).

His rivals were powerless to stop him: teammate George Russell, who nonetheless drove a great race, battled him for a long time but had to settle for second place. Joining the two Mercedes drivers on the podium is a proud Max Verstappen, who finished third in his Red Bull. Just off the podium are the two McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.

It was a huge disappointment for Ferrari at its home race. Lewis Hamilton finished in an unremarkable sixth place, while Charles Leclerc had a disastrous start to the race: on the first lap, he made contact with his teammate—who complained over the team radio—and on the third lap, he lost control of his car, ending his race prematurely. It was a bitter Sunday for Ferrari at Monza.
