F1 Madrid Grand Prix: Norris Edges Out Antonelli to Claim Pole. Ferrari Still Lagging Behind

Lando Norris surprised everyone and claimed pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix: on the brand-new track in Madrid, the British McLaren driver and reigning world champion finished ahead of his rivals with a best time of 1:31.824.

The British driver will thus start from the front row alongside World Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who set the second-fastest time of 1:31.835 in his Mercedes—11 thousandths of a second slower than Norris. Third place went to Max Verstappen (Red Bull) with a time of 1:31.964.

In fourth and fifth place were the two Ferraris driven by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The seven-time world champion clocked a time of 1:32.013, six thousandths of a second faster than the Monegasque driver, who was forced to settle for the third row. Starting alongside him will be the other Mercedes driver, George Russell. Rounding out the Top 10 are Piastri, Lawson, Colapinto, and Lindblad. For Lando Norris, this marks his 19th career pole.
