Italy: Roberto Mancini Under Fire—A Blunt Response to Cesc Fabregas’s Accusations

The return of the league following the break for international play is currently at the center of a heated controversy that directly involves Roberto Mancini’s Italian national team. The controversy stems from statements made by Cesc Fabregas, who, during the press conference ahead of the Como-Roma match, criticized the handling of players called up to the national team, focusing in particular on the case of Moise Kean.
The Como coach expressed his complete dissatisfaction: “Kean played while injured: he took a hit against Belgium, then played another 90 minutes. And now he’ll have to sit out for about ten days,” he said. Fabregas then broadened the discussion to the relationship between clubs and national teams, adding firmly: “There needs to be more communication with the clubs.”
Fabregas’s statements inevitably drew the Italian national team staff into the fray and, indirectly, head coach Roberto Mancini. The response from the Italian national team camp, however, was swift and came in strong terms. National team physician Angelo De Carli responded, rejecting the accusations regarding alleged shortcomings in relations with the players’ respective clubs.
“To monitor the condition of the players called up, the national team’s medical staff keeps the clubs constantly updated through frequent contact before, during, and after training camp,” he explained. This clarification was followed by an even stronger statement: “This has happened regularly during this break as well.” This statement can easily be interpreted as a direct response to the remarks made by the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder.
The back-and-forth thus sparked a debate on the management of players split between clubs and national teams—an issue that periodically resurfaces to dominate discussions in the world of soccer. On one side are the needs of the clubs; on the other, those of the national teams: a balance that is often difficult to strike and which, this time, led to a public clash between Fabregas and the Italian Football Federation.
