Naples: Fans Furious at a Player: “Get rid of him!”

This is certainly not an easy time for Napoli: Massimiliano Allegri’s team is coming off a loss to Venezia—its third in the league—and has just over half as many points as Inter in the standings, having played the same number of games. Not many expected such a difficult start for Rasmus Hojlund and his teammates.

The loss to Venezia, sealed by Akor Adams, sparked the fury of Neapolitan fans, who flooded social media with scathing protests. Lorenzo Lucca is the main target of the Azzurri fans’ criticism, as he once again delivered a highly subpar performance against Venezia. “He wouldn’t even play in Serie B—it’s inconceivable that he’s at Napoli. Just give him away!” declared Antonio on X, a sentiment echoed by Giuseppe: “I can’t remember many strikers as bad as Lucca—it’s a miracle he’s still here; there’s no other explanation.” There are hundreds of comments along these lines.

Even Enrico Varriale, a well-known Napoli fan, didn’t mince words: “I’m not among Allegri’s haters, even though I’ve never been enthusiastic about his coaching style. His mistakes were evident again today, when he practically handed a half to Venezia, but for me, his main fault remains that he passively endorsed the club’s (lack of) transfer decisions. Accepting the retention of players like Lang and Lucca—who are irritating both on and off the field—and of an entire squad that only Conte could have made cohesive and productive over the past two years is a serious mistake.”

“Is it arrogance or opportunism? It’s hard to say,” Varriale mused on social media. “Certainly, his predecessor left about ten million on the table, evidently no longer trusting the players or Aurelio De Laurentiis’s decisions.”

“Allegri, fresh off his failure in Milan, accepted a lucrative three-year deal to say yes to everything, perhaps thinking that qualifying for the #ChampionsLeague—the club’s sole objective—might be within reach. Both he and ADL seem to have miscalculated, and the numbers just don’t add up—even for the fans, who are growing increasingly disappointed and angry.”
