Forty-six years since the tragic death of Tonino D’Angelo, a talented soccer player

It has been 46 years since the tragic death of Antonio D’Angelo, known to everyone as Tonino, a soccer player from Puglia who died on October 21, 1980, following a car accident. This event left a deep mark on Italian soccer and is still remembered with great emotion today, especially by the fans of the teams for which he played.
Born in Altamura in 1953, D’Angelo was an attacking player capable of playing both as a midfielder and as a forward. Throughout his career, he forged a particularly strong bond with Bari, the club for which he had become one of the most iconic players. He played five seasons in the red-and-white jersey, making a total of 147 appearances.
He subsequently continued his career with Salernitana, where he scored 11 goals in 62 games between 1977 and 1979, during the Vestuti era, and for Taranto, before moving on to what was supposed to be a new chapter in his soccer career.
In October 1980, during the fall transfer window, D’Angelo was in fact transferred to Rende, a team competing in the Serie C1 league. The transfer was supposed to offer him a new professional opportunity, but fate tragically cut his journey short.
On October 21, the player set out by car for Calabria to join his new teammates. Near Sibari, however, he was involved in a very serious car accident.
His condition immediately appeared critical. Rushed to the hospital in Taranto, D’Angelo died at just 27 years old, before doctors could perform surgery on him.
The news of his passing caused great sorrow in Altamura and in the cities that had welcomed him throughout his career. The young soccer player never even had the chance to begin his new adventure with Rende, leaving an indelible memory among teammates, club officials, and fans.
His memory is kept alive above all by his hometown, which decided to name the Tonino D’Angelo Municipal Stadium after him—a tribute to an athlete whose life was cut short far too soon.
