Lorenzo Musetti, Comeback Victory Over Flavio Cobolli and a Spot in the Lyon Final

Lorenzo Musetti advances to the final of the ATP 250 in Lyon after a two-hour, 32-minute battle against Flavio Cobolli. The Tuscan tennis player won the all-Italian matchup in a comeback, prevailing with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and securing his spot in the tournament final, where he will face American Taylor Fritz, who defeated his compatriot Tommy Paul. For Musetti, this marks his tenth career final on the main tour, with the goal of winning his third ATP title. The player from Carrara hasn’t lifted a trophy since October 2022, when he triumphed in Naples, and now has the opportunity to end a four-year title drought
The first set was closely contested, with both players solid on serve. The first break points came in the sixth game, when Cobolli earned two chances to break his compatriot’s serve, but Musetti managed to fend them off with composure. The decisive moment comes in the tenth game: the Tuscan squanders several opportunities, saves two set points, but on the third he makes a forehand error and concedes the set 6-4 to the Roman.
Musetti’s response is not long in coming. In the second set, the player from Carrara immediately breaks serve thanks to a winning backhand and gradually takes control of the rallies. In the seventh game, he puts Cobolli in trouble again, breaking his serve to love after taking a 0-40 lead. The 6-2 score evened the match and sent it to a third set.
The decisive set kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last point. The two Italians remained evenly matched, holding their respective serves, until the tenth game, when Cobolli earned four match points. The Roman, however, fails to capitalize on any of the chances and ends up paying dearly for his missed opportunities.
Musetti takes advantage and, in the next game, secures the decisive break, closing it out with a winning forehand. Then, serving for the match, he didn’t falter: on match point, he was flawless at the net and sealed the final 7-5 score, completing a comeback that showcased his character.
