Kimi Antonelli secured an extraordinary pole position, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and beating his teammate George Russell by more than four-tenths of a second. The Mercedes driver put together an exceptional lap in Q3 and claimed the top spot on the grid with a time of 1’34″035, edging out the Dutchman’s Red Bull by 179 thousandths.

A performance worthy of applause for the young Italian, who was able to make the difference at the decisive moment of qualifying. Verstappen had to settle for second place, ahead of his teammate Isack Hadjar, who finished third, 215 thousandths behind the pole. Mercedes celebrates with Antonelli, while on the other side of the garage, Russell is forced to deal with a significant gap: the Briton finishes sixth, 441 thousandths behind his teammate.

Ferrari takes fourth and fifth place but fails to join the fight for pole. Charles Leclerc finished fourth, 232 thousandths behind Antonelli, while Lewis Hamilton was fifth, 276 thousandths behind. The seven-time world champion thus managed to finish ahead of Russell, while the McLarens lagged further behind: Oscar Piastri was seventh, and Lando Norris eighth. Rounding out the top 10 are Arvid Lindblad in ninth and Liam Lawson in tenth, who did not set a time in Q3.

Pole position makes tomorrow’s race even more interesting. Antonelli could even mathematically clinch the title, but only through a very specific combination of results: the Italian would need to win, Hamilton would need to finish fifth or worse, and Russell would need to finish no higher than ninth. The starting grid, with Antonelli leading the pack, Hamilton in fifth, and Russell in sixth, leaves several scenarios open. For the young Mercedes talent, it will be crucial to turn pole position into a victory, while his rivals’ results could give him an unforgettable day.
