Inter Transfer Market: Mauro Icardi’s Possible Return Divides Fans

Mauro Icardi’s appeal to Inter has taken Nerazzurri fans by surprise. The Argentine forward is currently a free agent following his departure from Galatasaray, but he insists he’s in top form: “I’m training like crazy to prove wrong on the field those who think I have nothing left to give. I dream of playing in Italy again,” he told La Repubblica.
The former Inter captain confessed that he dreams of returning to the Nerazzurri: “It would be special. I spent some important years there; wearing that jersey and the captain’s armband helped shape who I am. The ending was painful, and I’d like to be able to come full circle in a different way. But a return would only make sense if there’s mutual conviction and a goal to achieve together. I still have a lot to offer: if I return somewhere, I’ll do it to make a difference and to win.”
Icardi’s words have divided Inter fans: some mock and despise him after his stormy departure, while others would love to see him back in the Nerazzurri jersey right away. “He could very well fill the role of fifth striker given the mid-tier league; unfortunately, it won’t happen because Marotta is too proud,” “There’s no place for a-h…,” “@Inter, wake up—we’re down to three strikers; if Thuram gets even slightly injured, we’re done for. “He scores 30 goals,” “Get out of Milan, you scoundrel,” “I’d always take someone who scores 30 goals a season,” “Inter doesn’t need players who lack technique and are incapable of building plays,” “You ruined your career over a woman.”
Icardi has been a free agent since July 16, when—after four seasons and 77 goals—he became a free agent upon the expiration of his contract with Galatasaray. In Turkey, he earned approximately 3.5 million euros per season. In recent months, his name has been linked to several clubs: Lazio had launched an intense courtship, with sporting director Fabiani ready to offer him a 3.5 million contract through 2028—a figure deemed insufficient by his entourage. That possibility was ultimately ruled out due to Gennaro Gattuso’s public veto.
