Tennis, Atp abolishes line judges
The Atp in a statement announced that 2025 will be the year to say goodbye to line judges. The human eye will be permanently replaced by technology: the system used will be Electronic Line Calling Live.
“This is a pivotal moment for our sport, and we did not reach it without careful consideration,” said Atp President Gaudenzi. “While tradition is paramount and line judges have played an important role over the years, the Atp has a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technology, and tennis deserves the most accurate form of refereeing that we are pleased to be able to offer from 2025.
Former tennis player Corrado Barazzutti said in an interview with Agi, “I am in favor as long as the system works perfectly. The hawk’s eye has a margin of error of about three millimeters, which in judging whether a ball is inside or outside the line of the court is not little. Technology can also make mistakes; I hope the one that will be adopted in 2025 will be accurate. It will be a huge step forward because it will avoid human error and because it will eliminate any contestation: that of the hawk’s eye is a verdict accepted by the players.”
