Gael Monfils swagger: warning to Jannik Sinner
Gael Monfils is Jannik Sinner’s next opponent in the Toronto quarterfinals: in his four previous matches, the Italian tennis player leads 3-1, and the transalpine’s last victory was in Vienna in 2019.
Memorable between the two players was the lengthy Us Open match that ended in the fifth set in 2021, when the Azzurro almost had his crowd-charged opponent come back, while in the last precedent Sinner won easily in Sofia.
The main challenge for Sinner is the moment of form and confidence of the French world number 270, who has eliminated thick opponents such as Vukic, Eubanks and Tsitsipas in succession, while the Azzurro, back from a three-week stop, played the only match against Berrettini while he made it to the quarters without taking the court after Murray’s forfeit.
To L’Equipe Monfils issued his challenge to Sinner: “I know him well. he beat me two years ago in Sofia, the same year at the Us Open. He’s in the top 10 in the world and it will be complicated, but I’m looking forward to playing this quarterfinal with him.”
