The technical director of the national teams Antonio La Torre has announced the list of summoned players for the Rome 2024 European Championships, scheduled at the Olympic Stadium and the Foro Italico Park from Friday, June 7 to Wednesday, June 12.
There will be 116 Azzurri present, of which 63 men and 53 women: a total number never so high for Italy in the previous twenty-five editions of the continental review. Six Tokyo Olympic champions are part of the team: Marcell Jacobs (100 and 4×100), Gianmarco Tamberi (high), Antonella Palmisano (20 km march), Filippo Tortu and Fausto Desalu (entered on 200 and 4×100), Lorenzo Patta (4×100). The only absentee among the gold medalists of the Gamesè however, Massimo Stano held back by’injury in Antalya.
On the team, Budapest world silver medalist in the weight (and indoor bronze medalist) Leonardo Fabbri and the other three medal winners from the Glasgow World Indoor Championships Lorenzo Simonelli (entered in the 110hs and the 4×100), Mattia Furlani (long) and Zaynab Dosso (entered in the 100 and with the 4×100). Half marathon for Yeman Crippa, also entered in the 10,000 meters of which è the reigning Munich 2022 champion.
Precisely in the 10,000, which on this occasion also counts for the European Cup, by regulation up to five athletes can be lined up. In the half marathon, which in addition to individual titles also puts team medals up for grabs, up to six athletes may run. For the men’s 100 and men’s high, given the allocation of wild cards for the reigning champions, there are four summoned and not three. In the specialties from 100 to 400 meters (including hurdles), the best twelve in the European Road to Rome ranking will not compete in the batteries but directly from the semifinals (names will be announced by European Athletics in the coming days).
