Vuelta: Kaden Groves returns to win, Ben O’Connor stays in red. What a risk for Primoz Roglic
Second success for Kaden Groves
Kaden Groves è the winner of the fourteenth stage of the Vuelta a España 2024, 199.8 km route from Villafranca del Bierzo to Villablino. The Australian rider of Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinted past Belgian Wout van Aert (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) and New Zealander Corbin Strong (Israel Premier-Tech) at the finish line in the Castile and Leon resort.
Nothing changes in the general classification, with Ben O'Connor (Decathlon-AG2R-La Mondiale Team) remaining in the red jersey with a 1'21" lead over Primoz Roglic. The Slovenian of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe actually risked a lot during the last descent of the day: victim of a mechanical problem with about 15 km to go, he had to swap his bike with that of teammate Daniel Martinez and start a furious comeback against the peloton, managing to get back in time without losing time in the general classification.
As for the other rankings, Wout van Aert retains the green jersey as leader of the points classification (291 to Groves's 182) and è also first in the climbers's jersey (46 points to Marc Soler's 23 from UAE Team Emirates, who wears the polka-dot jersey in the race). The white jersey for best young rider è however, belongs to Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), who has a 17" lead over Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).
Sunday marks stage number 15 of the Spanish stage race: it starts in Infiesto and, after a 143-kilometer route, arrives in Valgrande-Pajares, a mountain stage that could shuffle the cards ahead of the final week. The final finish of the Vuelta è scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8, with a 24.6-kilometer time trial that will arrive in Madrid.
