In Killington Mikaela Shiffrin goes for 100 wins and Federica Brignone leaves her as the favorite
A giant slalom and women’s slalom valid for the World Cup are being held in Killington over the weekend. Mikaela Shiffrin, the 29-year-old U.S. outfielder originally from Colorado but who grew up skiing on the snows of Vermont, the state where the two races are held, will have a double chance to touch the fateful quota of 100 Cup victories.
Mikaela è got to 99 after wins in the first two slaloms of the season in Levi. In slalom in Killington she has won six times out of seven, while in giant slalom she è never succeeded: out of six participations she has collected one second and two third places and between the wide gates she will have a’formidable opponent in Federica Brignone.
The 34-year-old Valdaostan star triumphed a month ago in the giant in Soelden, becoming the oldest ever winner of a World Cup race and was second in 2019 behind Marta Bassino. Here are Federica’s words reported by fisi.org on the eve of the giant.
“In Copper we did super work on smoothness and speed, with only two days of giant slalom. Unfortunately in Killington the snow conditions are not ideal, the temperatures are high and there’è little snow. We don’t know what we will find but it will be that way for all of them, so there are no excuses”.
“I am skiing quite well, the woman to beat is certainly not me, I just know that my race will be against the weather and not against the opponents. Iò will do my best, we will see what will come out. From here to the end of the season will be a long race in stages, it will be important to remain consistent in performance until March”.
“I feel good, it was important to make the most of the two weeks in Copper and we have succeeded – adds for her part Bassino, the’other azzurra tip awaiting the recovery of Sofia Goggia -. The Killington slope I like, it has technical sections that suit me well, I will only think about attacking”.
