Pope Francis never hid his passion for sports and in particular for San Lorenzo de Almagro, a club that boasts in its palmarès 15 Argentine championships and 2 national cups, as well as a Copa Libertadores, a Copa Sudamericana and a Copa Mercosur. Just from the ‘Ciclón’, as the azulgrana club is nicknamed, came via social media a moving message to honor the memory of the Holy Father, who passed away Monday morning at the age of 88.

“He was never just any man, but he was always one of us. ‘Cuervo’ (that&#8217s how San Lorenzo fans and players are nicknamed, ed.) as a child and as a man… Cuervo as a priest and cardinal… Cuervo also as a Pope… He always conveyed his passion for the Ciclón: when he went to the Viejo Gasómetro to see the ’46 team, when he confirmed Angelito Correa in the chapel of the Ciudad Deportiva, when he welcomed with great happiness the azulgrana visits to the Vatican…”

“Member No. 88235– writes the club again – From Jorge Mario Bergoglio to Francis, there’s one thing that has never changed: his love for the Ciclón. Wrapped in deep sorrow, from San Lorenzo today we say to Francis: Goodbye and thank you! We will be together for eternity’” concludes the message from the Argentine company.

San Lorenzo, during the pontificate of Francis, won the 2013 Torneo Inicial (the last ‘scudetto‘ in the trophy cabinet, in order of time), the 2014 Copa Libertadores (in the double final against the Paraguayans of Nacional, 1-1 in the first leg and 1-0 in the return in Argentina) and the 2015 Supercopa Argentina (beating Boca Juniors with a peremptory 4-0 at the ‘Mario Kempes’ stadium in Cordoba).
