Giorgio Pietrangeli, son of legendary Italian tennis player Nicola Pietrangeli, passed away in Rome at just 59 years old due to illness.

Giorgio was one of the first Italian surfing champions in the 1980s: he participated with the national team in the 1988 World Championships in Puerto Rico and the European Championships in Portugal the following year. In 1985 he participated in the European Championships in Forte dei Marmi, and in 1989 he won the Italian Championships in Viareggio.

“The President of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation Angelo Binaghi and the entire tennis movement warmly embrace the family and all those who have lived alongside him at this time of immense grief” reads the note issued earlier in the day.

Giorgio leaves behind his father Nicola, wife Carola, daughter Nicola and brothers Marco and Filippo.
