Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, ‘premiere’ in Serie A announced: ‘Historic moment’
Ferreri Caputi will direct Sassuolo-Salernitana
It will be a historic weekend for Serie A as it returns from the break dedicated to the activities of the national teams: for the first time in history a woman referee, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, will direct a match in the top league, specifically Sassuolo-Salernitana on Sunday afternoon.
This was announced by Alfredo Trentalange, president of the AIA (Italian Referees Association), during a press conference held in the premises of the Federcalcio headquarters in Via Allegri in Rome. “This is a historic moment,” the former whistle blower from Turin told reporters, anticipating the designations for Serie A and Serie B matches.
Ferrieri Caputi, a 31-year-old from Livorno, refereed in Serie D between 2015 and 2020 and in Serie C until last season. She has been on the CAN A-B staff since last July 1, and on October 2 will be the first female match director to referee a match in the men’s top division.
