Atalanta, Lookman cautioned for jubilation: Gian Piero Gasperini’s side of the story
An admonition that has caused discussion, but can also be commented on with irony.
Ademola Lookman put Atalanta ahead at the Dacia Arena in the match that later ended 2-2 against Udinese. The Orobico striker took advantage of Muriel’s assist to put his signature on the match in the 36th minute. He then exulted by mimicking binoculars with his fingers, earning a yellow card from referee Doveri. An episode on which at the end of the match it was Gian Piero Gasperini himself who definitively shed light.
Lookman is in fact used to celebrating each of his markings in that way, exploiting a pun with his last name (“look” means “to look” in English), but he was sanctioned for unsportsmanlike conduct. The gesture, in fact, was interpreted as provocative toward Udinese fans. This is also the reconstruction of Gasperini himself, who, however, commented on it ironically in a press conference. “It was a misinterpretation of his exultation. Things happen, lucky that at least his name is Lookman and not in other strange ways. However, these are matches from which we come out even more aware,” said the Atalanta coach.
