Intercontinental Cup is PSG’s, Flamengo beaten on penalties

At the Ahmed bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, Paris Saint-Germain won the Intercontinental Cup for the first time in its history by beating Flamengo in the final on penalty kicks.

In the 9th minute a goal was cancelled for the European champions, Fabian Ruiz put in a left-footed outside shot into the goal that remained empty due to a wrong exit by Rossi but on the previous cross he had already crossed the goal line.

In the 38th minute, however, the goal is valid: another mistake by Rossi who deflects a Doué cross onto the feet of Kvaratskhelia who scores easily. In the 62nd minute, the South American champions equalized: a penalty kick awarded for Marquinhos’ foul on De Arrascaeta, from the penalty spot Jorginho clears Safonov.

Despite chances on both sides, the 1-1 score with which regulation time ended does not change in extra time, so it goes to penalties. It then goes to penalties and the Rio team scores only one, with de la Cruz, missing the other four, or rather, it is Safonov who saves them.

For the Parisians, Vitinha and Nuno Mendes score, Dembelé misses the second penalty and Barcola the fourth, failing match point, but then, due to Luiz Araujo’s error, there is no need for them to shoot the fifth penalty: the Intercontinental is for the first time PSG’s.
