Adhu Malual denounces sleazy racist slurs in Piedmont
The home defeat suffered by Pinerolo against Macerata in a match valid for the top women’s volleyball series brings with it very heavy aftermath. Adhu Malual, opposite of Monviso Volley and athlete of the Italian national team, chose Instagram to tell in very harsh words what happened in the stands. The girl, who was born in South Sudan and has also previously played for the Italian national team, denounced personal attacks and, even more serious, racially motivated insults that were allegedly directed not only at her, but also at her family members present in the stands hosting the home matches of the Piedmontese team.
“Last night I played at home – she recounted -. And I did not feel at home. In my 12-year career, I had never witnessed or experienced on my skin such an attitude from the public that should support their team. One can make mistakes. It’s part of the game, it’s part of the job, it’s part of being human. What is not part of the sport are insults, constant booing, personal insults and yes racist comments, directed not only at me but also at my family members in the stands. From the first point to the last. Not to spur. Not to support. Just to hit”.

I am proud to play in one of the strongest leagues in the world– she added -I am proud to wear the Azzurri jersey, because the love I feel for this country, which is my home, is indescribable. And I will not allow anyone to question it. Bad moments exist for everyone, in any field. There is a fine line between cheering and disrespect. Last night that line was crossed several times. And when it is not only the athlete on the field who pays the price, but also the team and its family in the stands, then the problem is not sporting. It is human”.
