Luciano Darderi continues to run: goal getting closer and closer

Luciano Darderi starts in the best possible way his journey at the Buenos Aires tournament, ATP 250 on clay that the Italian-Argentine faces as the number 2 seed: already admitted for this reason to the round of 16, Darderi defeated Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera, number 114 in the ranking, in two comfortable sets, won 6-1, 6-3 after one hour and twenty-two minutes of play. Twenty-second in the world rankings, Darderi is betting big on a home tournament for him to try to break into the Top 20.

The match did not present any particular difficulties: in the first set Darderi immediately flew to 5-0 and could have finished even without leaving a game to his opponent if he had not wasted as many as three set balls on Barrios Vera’s serve. In the second fraction, the Chilean, who went down 4-1, was good at coming back up to 4-3 but Darderi had no problem, in the last two games, to put an end to his first match of the season on clay after his brilliant experience at the Australian Open.

In fact, clay is the preferred surface for Luciano Darderi, who has won four ATP 250 tournaments in his career on this very surface (Cordoba 2024, Marrakech, Båstad, and Umag 2025). In Melbourne, however, he was able to prove his talent even on the hard surface, beating one after the other such excellent tennis players as Cristian Garin, Sebastian Baez and Karen Khachanov. The Australian dream was cut short before the overpowering Jannik Sinner, winner in three sets in the Italian derby valid for the round of 16.

Born in Villa Gesell, near Buenos Aires, on February 14, 2002 but in Italy since he was 10 years old, Luciano Darderi is the son of former tennis player Gino (who guides him as coach) and brother of Vito Antonio, class of 2008. In his career, in addition to four ATP tournaments, he has also won two ITF tournaments and four Challengers, between 2021 and 2025.

In the most important tournaments on the circuit he is still looking for a level result: the fourth round reached in Australia is so far the most relevant result in this respect at Grand Slam level, in Masters 1000 tournaments he did not go beyond the third round (Shanghai 2025) and in ATP 500s he stopped at most at the second round (Vienna 2024).
