Federico Pellegrino will not take part in the 50 km, the race that closes the men’s cross-country skiing program at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina. After dragging the Italian relay team to a historic bronze medal (first Olympic podium in the discipline in 20 years) and taking bronze in the sprint team together with Elia Barp, the Valle d’Aosta star was supposed to take part in the queen event. But a few hours before the start, Pellegrino announced his withdrawal.

The 35-year-old will not be at the start due to a flu-like condition, thus depriving the Val di Fiemme audience of the chance to witness his last competitive farewell on his home snows. The 50 km was supposed to represent the farewell of Pellegrino, who will now hang up his skis without the final consecration on the stage that has seen him grow and triumph: his last race will therefore remain the podium conquered in the team sprint.

In the absence of the iconic face of our snows and flag bearer of the Opening Ceremony, representing Italy in the “snow marathon” will be Elia Barp and Simone Daprà. The spotlight will be on Norway’s Johannes Klaebo, already the dominator of these Olympics: winner of 10 km, skiathlon, relay, team sprint and sprint, Klaebo will try to complete his en-plein, winning a sixth gold and consolidating even more his place in the legend of cross-country skiing.

Fifth place for Arianna Fontana and sixth place for Arianna Sighel in the women’s 1500-meter short track final at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Fontana, who is in the hunt for her 15th career Olympic medal, broke away from the leading athletes in the final of the race, as did her national teammate, and was unable to come back.

The final of the 1500-meter short track final was held by Arianna Sighel.

Gold went to Korea&#8217s Kim, who finished ahead of compatriot Choi, while Stoddard of the United States took the bronze medal. Elisa Confortola’s other Italian had been eliminated in the semifinals. Fontana had gained access to the final despite a disastrous fall during the batteries, when she was swept by Poland&#8217s Sellier, who in turn was knocked down by an American athlete.
