BVB icon scolds Nico Schlotterbeck

The future of Nico Schlotterbeck remains in the spotlight at Borussia Dortmund. The 26-year-old player, BVB’s defensive leader, has not yet decided whether or not to accept the contract’renewal offer the Yellow and Black club has made to him in recent weeks.
Schlotterbeck is being followed by several top clubs, most notably Bayern Munich, and his hesitation is likely to create more and more misunderstandings as the weeks go by. At ‘Kicker’ a BVB legend like Jürgen Kohler wanted to have his say on the matter, saying he is concerned by the defender’s doubts.
“I am sure he is considering his options, but I don’t like the fact that he is taking it so easy”. According to Kohler, a Borussia Dortmund icon from 1995 to 2002, the German national should consider that he has “a fantastic fan base, international matches, and excellent opportunities to become one of the club”s great flags if he stays at BVB.

While the road to Bayern Munich has definitely taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks after Upamecano’s renewal, Schlotterbeck remains highly followed abroad, particularly by Real Madrid, which is looking for world-class defenders to rejuvenate its squad.
Schlotterbeck is due to expire his contract in 2027, and should the contract renewal negotiations fail, he will have to be sold in the summer to avoid losing him for free a year from now. Sporting director Lars Ricken has urged him to accept to become an’icon like Mats Hummels and Kohler.
Kohler on Kicker also commented on Borussia Dortmund’s chances of challenging Bayern for the title: “I don’t think Bayern has already won. They play attractive soccer and have several points to spare, but their risky style makes them vulnerable”.
