The bobsled champion Laura Nolte, a gold medalist at the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, sounded the alarm about the future of her discipline in an interview with Bild. Bobsledding has long been a reservoir of medals for Germany, but the athletes who practice it, as soon as they get off the Olympic stage, have to do the impossible in order to finance their careers.

“We bobbers are by far the most successful medal winners, but we have very little television coverage. This is basically a disgrace. The equipment, hotels and transportation costs alone cost more than 50 thousand euros a year. I am incredibly grateful to my sponsors, because their support is by no means taken for granted”.

After the Olympics many disciplines disappear from television, relegated to live streaming, if they are lucky. “In addition to hard training, it takes a large dose of idealism to continue practicing this discipline”, continued the 27-year-old Nolte.
