A new world record for Italian rowing. Andrea Panizza, vice-Olympic champion at Paris 2024 and world champion at Shanghai 2025 in the four pair, set a new indoor record over the 1,000-meter distance. With a time of 2’38”0, on the oarergometer, the rower school SC Moto Guzzi and now a member of the Fiamme Gialle, lowered by one tenth the best performance ever signed in 2026 by Logan Ullrich, New Zealand’s vice-Olympic champion in the four without. These are the intermediate times: 30”2 (200), 31”7 (400), 32”2 (600), 32”1 (800) and 31”8 (1000).

Panizza will be engaged next Saturday, Feb. 28, in the World Championships final after finishing first in the qualifying round. Also on Saturday, Panizza will also play his chances for rainbow medals on the minute, where he finished second in the qualifying round.

The Lecco native is the February athlete of the month for World Rowing. It is a new recognition of the international federation towards blue rowing after the four of a pair, for the first time since the establishment of the World Rowing Awards, was honored as the men’s crew of 2025.

The town where he grew up is Mandello del Lario, in the province of Lecco, the same place that was the birthplace of Giuseppe Moioli, who won Olympic gold in London 1948 in the four without and who is his point of reference. His entire family practiced rowing, and as a child he tried it too, never getting out of the boat again. The 25-year-old from the Fiamme Gialle has won prestigious medals, one of which came in 2018 with success at the World Championships in the four of a pair, 20 years after the last conquest for Italy. So much commitment, but the joy of doing for work what he loves most and a future to be written: in Tokyo 2020 he and his teammates did not go beyond fifth place, in Paris the goal was the podium and they did not fail.
