Kyrie Irving demolished by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kyrie Irving is among the most controversial figures in the NBA world: his crackpot theories have been the subject of criticism and contention, which was recently joined by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The American basketball legend thundered, “Kyrie Irving would be regarded as a comic buffoon if it were not for his influence on young people who admire athletes.”
“When I think back to some of the athletes who have used their status to better society – Colin Kaepernick, LeBron James, Muhammad Ali, Bill Russell, Billie Jean King, Arthur Ashe and others – it becomes clear to me how much Irving has damaged the reputation of all athletes who try to be seen as more than just silly players,” he wrote on his Substack page.
“Irving has continued to promote his anti-vax sentiments without any regard for the lives and health of others, even proclaiming himself a ‘martyr.’ Seriously. We should have left him in his broth of gelatinous ignorance. Rich and famous people always get away with saying stupid things because money insulates them from consequences.”
In closing, Jabbar appealed to the companies that have Irving as a spokesperson: “Irving doesn’t seem to have the ability to change, so let’s do it ourselves and tell their sponsors: drop Irving, or we’ll drop you.”
