F1, Sergio Perez honors Charles Leclerc and speaks out on the FIA
Having effectively decided the world championship, his opinion is clear.
Max Verstappen became the 2022 Formula 1 world champion at Suzuka, winning the Japanese Grand Prix. If it was possible, however, it is also thanks to the second place of his teammate Sergio Perez, who throughout the race finale attacked Charles Leclerc. The overtaking, in fact, was, however, sanctioned by a penalty decided by the FIA, with the Mexican clearly framing what happened.
“The battle with Leclerc was wonderful, but without DRS and in the rain it is difficult to overtake at Suzuka. Charles then was driving very intelligently, preventing me from attacking him. Even in the points where my chances were better, he was doing great. And I realized that only with his mistake could I pass him,” Perez admitted.
Then the Red Bull driver’s analysis of the last lap, Leclerc’s long run at the chicane and the 5-second penalty imposed by the FIA. “He lost control, I thought I could take advantage, but he stayed in front. It seemed to me a risky maneuver, evidently the race officials thought the same thing. So the penalty is fair,” Perez concluded.
