Tragic car accident: dead Gianni Zappi
Farewell to Gianni Zappi
A serious bereavement for Italian basketball. A victim of a tragic car accident, Gianni Zappi died. He was 76 years old.
Among the first to remember him was Pallacanestro Reggiana, which honored his memory with heartfelt phrases, not of circumstance.
“Gianni Zappi will forever remain in the history of our club as the coach who first brought the club into the professional ranks, with the 1982 conquest of promotion to Serie A2 in the Udine playoff against Necchi Pavia. “Giannetto,” as everyone nicknamed him, remained at the helm of the team the following season as well, centering salvation,” the red and white club wrote.
Imolese, a well-known personality in the Italian basketball world not only for his more than 10-year career on the bench, but also for having served as USAP (Unione Sindacale Allenatori Pallacanestro) president, Federal Councilor and executive, particularly as Sports Director of Andrea Costa Imola. Gianni leaves behind his wife Alide and son Mauro. Pallacanestro Reggiana expresses its deepest condolences to the family and has already forwarded a request to FIBA to be able to remember him this evening with a minute of recollection before the start of the BCL match against AEK Athens.”
