Great news for those who love snow

Excellent news for those who love snow: the Dolomiti Superski will regularly open the 2022-23 winter season between November 25 (Obereggen-Ski Center Latemar at night) and December 3 when, progressively, the lifts of the 15 districts that make up one of the world’s most famous ski carousels will be activated. And with the opening of the lifts from mid-December, World Cup and European Cup skiing competitions will begin in Italy. These include the Obereggen European Cup slalom, the oldest European Cup race scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 15, on the Maierl slope, which, as per tradition, will open Italy’s five World Cup races: in Gardena with the Super G (Dec. 16) and the downhill (Dec. 17), Val Badia with the giant slaloms (Dec. 18-19), and finally the night slalom in Madonna di Campiglio (Dec. 22).

The long-awaited news for mountain enthusiasts of the opening of the winter season as early as the end of November in the Dolomiti Superski ski areas was given at the traditional annual meeting with ski clubs from Verona, Mantua and the Brescia side of Lake Garda. It was announced by Fiemme-Obereggen Consortium coordinator Flavio Delvai, a leading figure in the winter world for 43 years. Present at al Frassino in Peschiera del Garda were representatives of the Civetta, San Martino di Castrozza-Passo Rolle, Lusia-Passo San Pellegrino, Cermis-Cavalese, Bellamonte, and Ski Center Latemar ski resorts: presidents and members of the ski clubs listened to what’s new for the 2022-23 season. Among those from Verona present were Sci Club Villafranca chaired by Alessio Cordioli, Gs Drago by Bruno Bottacini, Sci Club Scaligero by Massimo Dal Corso, Detour Boarding Association by Luca Molon. Flavio Delvai, coordinator of the consortium, previewed some new features of the season. “All Dolomiti Superski ski areas will open between late November and early December, guaranteeing the usual quality of snow and services. All resorts will refer to the new online sales system, my invitation is that fans make use of it,” Delvai stressed. Ensuring the winter season means “devouring” electricity to open the doors and to continue. There is no shortage of economic unknowns brought about by several factors including Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, which has contributed to skyrocketing natural gas and electricity bills.

“There is a great appetite for snow sports, skiing, snowboarding, sledding and whatever else the mountains have to offer,” said Valeria Ghezzi, president of Anef, the national ropeway operators’ association that is a member of Confindustria, and of the company that manages the San Martino di Castrozza lifts. “We need natural snow,” concluded President Ghezzi, “natural snow will be a formidable promotional vehicle for the coming winter and at the same time will provide cost savings on electricity and water services.
