Mauro Vegni, the general director of the Giro d’Italia, spoke with Sportal.it about the situation of cycling at home and hopes on 2023. “We hope that a better season awaits us than the one that just ended, but the premises are definitely not good, because the top rider of our movement, Vincenzo Nibali, has retired after a very important career,” he said on the sidelines of the Tour des Alps presentation.
“I don’t see ‘light,’ let’s say, for stage races, however, the riders coming into the limelight are getting younger and younger, no one forbids us to hope that some Italian guy will manage to amaze us,” Vegni added.
