Fencing, European Paralympic Championships without Bebe Vio
Fencing, the European
Italy’s Paralympic fencing adventure at the Warsaw 2022 European Championships kicks off on Tuesday. From Nov. 29 to Dec. 4, in fact, the Polish capital will be home to the continental kermis, which comes just days after the Italian national team’s excellent performance in the World Cup stage in Eger, where the path to Qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympics officially began, at the dawn of the season that will then lead to the “home” World Cup in October 2023 in Terni.
Now, route to Warsaw, where 15 Italian athletes will compete. The coordinator of the sector Dino Meglio and the three weapon managers, Simone Vanni for foil, Francesco Martinelli for epee and Marco Ciari for saber, have focused on a mix of athletes, including young people in great growth and elements of consolidated experience in the international arena, capable of ensuring quality and competitiveness to the Italian delegation, while waiting for the next return to the platform of the multi-decorated Bebe Vio.
The chosen for the European Championships in Poland, for the men’s group, are Matteo Betti, Marco Cima, Matteo Dei Rossi, Edoardo Giordan, Emanuele Lambertini, Michele Massa, Gianmarco Paolucci and Leonardo Rigo. On the women’s side, on the other hand, Alessia Biagini, Sofia Brunati, Julia Markowska, Veronica Martini, Andreea Mogos, Rossana Pasquino and Loredana Trigilia will answer the call. Among women, however, Consuelo Nora will not start, as the women’s category C competitions – in which she was supposed to take part – have been canceled, but for the reigning Italian and world champion there will be time to make up for it.
For several Azzurri in Warsaw, commitments will be in two arms, and there will be to represent the Tricolor in both individual competitions and team events, in a busy competition calendar that will unfold over six days, to award a total of 20 European titles (14 at the individual level and 6 in “team events”).
