Genoa, Gilardino’s module change decisive for breakthrough
The Gryphon has turned
Genoa seems to have definitely turned around: the Grifone since Alberto Gilardino’s arrival on the Rossoblù bench has not lost a game and, with the exception of the Coppa Italia defeat against Roma, has been unbeaten since December 8. So far, the former Primavera coach has collected 13 points in five matches, bringing his side back to the top of the standings, six points behind leading Frosinone.
An important role in the change of gear of the Genoese team has certainly been played by the change of form. In fact, in the streak of three consecutive victories against Frosinone, Bari and Venezia, Gilardino has always adopted the three-man defense either from the start or changing during the course of the game.
The three-man defensive line was also used by the Rossoblù coach in the Coppa Italia against Jose Mourinho’s men, playing a good game and holding up until the 64th when a great play by Paulo Dybala unhinged the Grifone rearguard.
Moreover, this change in formation has generated great solidity in the backline, which has conceded only one goal to opponents in the last five games, compared to the six goals scored.
