Rafa Nadal: Uncle Toni moves away from retirement
The great champion’s retirement does not appear imminent at the moment.
Rafa Nadal is coming off a not easy period, due to the injuries that have affected his last seasons. However, this does not mean that the Mallorcan is considering an imminent farewell to tennis, as his uncle, who has also been his coach in the past, was keen to assure.
“On his eventual retirement there are several hypotheses circulating. However, no such talk has ever emerged with him, and Rafa has no intention of quitting,” Toni Nadal explained to the Spanish news agency ‘Efe’. With a clarification, “The opinion of the doctors will always have to be taken into account.”
“Right now he has more pain than would be desirable. But Rafa is still living a decidedly good moment, and I am convinced that if his physique allows him to do so he will continue playing tennis for a long time to come,” Toni Nadal added.
Then there is another important aspect, which the champion’s uncle emphasized: that of the long-distance challenge with Novak Djokovic, who has joined him at 22 Slams won. “It will be a complicated fight, against a great champion,” were his words. To overcome him will be complicated, I hope he has a chance at Roland Garros. Because that is his tournament.”
