Iliass Aouani historic, new Italian record in marathon
Record-breaking Iliass Aouani
Record-breaking feat. Italy’s Iliass Aouani improves the Italian marathon record with 2h07:16 in Barcelona. After three years, Eyob Faniel’s 2h07:19 set in Seville, also in Spain, on Feb. 23, 2020, is lowered by three seconds. Fantastic race for the 27-year-old from Milan who finished in ninth place, running in the first thirty kilometers on the pace of three minutes per thousand meters. In the final, the Blue Flames bearer recovers positions, despite a slight decline, and reaches the goal.
It was the third time in his career on the 42.195 kilometers for the engineer, a graduate of the United States, who has been living and training in Ferrara for a couple of years under the guidance of Massimo Magnani. Last season he became the best Italian marathon debutant ever with 2h08:34 in Milan, then at the European Championships in Munich he placed 19th in 2h15:34 conditioned by cramps, while he had risen to prominence in 2021 with an unprecedented poker of Italian titles (cross, 10,000 on track, 10 km on road and half marathon). This year, after a forced covid withdrawal from last December’s European XC Championships, he dropped to 1h01:49 in the mid-February half-marathon in Verona on his way to an exploit.
