Ten years without Stefano Borgonovo

Ten years after the death of Stefano Borgonovo, the former Como, Sambenedettese, Fiorentina, Milan, Pescara, Udinese and Brescia player taken away by ALS, his wife Chantal Guigard remembered him in the columns of the Cittadino.

“Time has flown by, but the void he left continues to remain immense. Just as the hope that we will finally be able to find a cure for ALS, a devious and aggressive disease, on which Stefano turned the spotlight as no one had ever done before. Spotlights that, however, the soccer world continues to keep off, despite the fact that there are several footballers who have died from this disease.”

“We will restart with initiatives to raise funds for research. No one deserves to have to fight against a disease like ALS. Stefano, for one, did not deserve it. I am also sorry that 10 years after his passing, no football institution has thought of organizing a moment in his memory.” “It is a missed opportunity -he added- both to remember his great career as a footballer and to talk about Sla. But also to acquaint new generations with the figure of Stefano. It would have been right for him, too, for his world, the world of soccer, to remember him. Little would have been enough, even just a soccer tournament in his memory or an evening of awareness, but no one organized anything. I think Stephen was a fine example and he would be worth remembering. I, right now, did not feel up to it and do not feel up to organizing a public event. I will remember him in the family, with his children who have become adults in these 10 years. Stephen would surely be proud of them and how they have grown up,” he concluded.
