Wimbledon, Lorenzo Musetti reveals his metamorphosis
Lorenzo Musetti enjoys his first win at Wimbledon against Juan Pablo Varillas: “A memorable day, to have won today is a confirmation and a satisfaction. On the court the ranking always goes out the window and you have to prove everything, that’s the beauty of tennis. I played a good match today, there was a phase when I was not in control but today was not playing well because of the wind and the conditions.”
The Carrara tennis player is getting better and better on grass and reveals a change in his game: “I think I have matured so much compared to a year ago at the level of my game and I have clearer ideas about what I need to do. This gives me a hand in simplifying my repertoire of plays and shots.”
More on the simplification of his game: “It’s clear that the running long backhand or the short ball are the things that draw applause. I like to play them too, I’ve always called myself an aesthete, because I like the beauty of the shot, but at the end of the day you squeeze you’re always talking about a point. At these levels you need concreteness and simplicity.”
“Today to close the game I was solid at one point, because at times I was abusing the back too much by being too far behind, so I tried to get close again, trying to put more pressure on him. Then it’s clear that I’ll always be looking for beauty, because that’s what sets me apart, but finding the right balance is the thing that will make me take the leap forward.”
