Jai Hindley double shot: stage and yellow jersey to Laruns
The fifth stage of the Tour de France, the first of three in the Pyrenees, the 162.7-kilometer Pau-Laruns with three grand prix de montagne, the Col de Soudet, the Col d’Ichère and the Col de Marie Blanque, was won solo by Jai Hindley.ciclismmo
The 27-year-old Australian of Bora-Hansgrohe, triumphant winner of the Giro d’Italia 2022, also took the yellow jersey, which was on the shoulders of Britain’s Adam Yates, by breaking away already in the first kilometers and gradually breaking away from all his fellow riders. At 32 seconds was Giulio Ciccone, who sprinted past the group of immediate pursuers, including the Austrian, Felix Gall, third, and Jonas Vingegaard.
Last year’s Grande Boucle winner blamed a 34-second gap, but with 3 kilometers to the top of Marie Blanque, he pulled away from his great rival Tadej Pogacar, handing him a 1’04” gap at the finish. In the general classification Hindley leads with 47″ over Vingegaard and 1’03” over Ciccone, Yates is now fifth at 1’34” and Pogacar sixth at 1’40”.
