Kooij’s stroke shakes Poland
With a high-level sprint Olav Kooij won the fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne. Starting from the back, the Jumbo-Visma rider burned through Matjin Van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) and Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) in the final meters. For Kooij it was an encore: he won the first stage and the first leader’s jersey of last year’s edition, as well as his first victory in a WorldTour race.
“Everyone wanted to be in front so as not to take any risks,” the young Dutchman stressed. “We knew we had to stay focused on the last corner. I came out of the corner in second position and was forced to launch my sprint from the distance. I would have liked to have tried a second later, but you have to go when you have the chance, so I tried, I gave it everything and I’m really happy to have won.”
“I’m happy to get another win here in Poland in a race that obviously suits me. In a few days I will be part of the national team in Glasgow, so this stage win is definitely a boost for my morale before such an important event,” added Kooij.
