New year, new ATP scores: what changes for Jannik Sinner
On the eve of the first tournaments of the year, the ATP made official the new scoring system that will be adopted for the world rankings starting in 2024. For those who win major tournaments, i.e., Grand Slam and Masters 1000 tournaments, the scoring remains the same, i.e., 2,000 and 1,000 points, respectively; however, those for those who make it to the finals, semifinals or quarterfinals will increase. For example, in a Slam who loses in the final will haveà 1300 points instead ofé 1200.
So what changes for a player like Jannik Sinner, who has not yet won a Slam and has pocketed “only” a Masters 1000? In theory not much, it will all depend on the 22-year-old from Sesto Pusteria, South Tyrol, continuing at a high level, since this system seems made to reward continuity of results more than wins.
With his results in the Indian Wells and Monte Carlo Slams and Masters 1000 (semifinals) and Miami (final), Jannik would have earned 270 points under the new system, but obviously those ahead of him in the rankings, namely; Novak Djokovic with the final he lost at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev would have earned more points.
Moral of the story, good for Sinner that this new system, in the absence of wins, rewards a little bit more; noble placings in a tournament and continuity; but it will be up to him to be even more continuous than he already has been in an otherwise extraordinary 2023. And still, hitting a few final wins in one or more of these tournaments would not be bad at all…
This is how the scores change in 2024.
