Monza, Autodrome redevelopment work kicks off
The Brianza racetrack is preparing to change its face ahead of the next round of the world championship.
The Autodromo di Monza is getting a makeover. Monday è è was the day when modernization work started on the track that, since 1950, has hosted the Italian Grand Prix d'Italia in every Formula 1 season except 1980 (when it was raced at Imola). Ambitious works, which will cost a total of 21 million euros, and a very strict timetable: you have to close in 140 days.
The redevelopment work, as explained by the 'Gazzetta dello Sport' website, was necessary to keep Monza's safety standards up to contemporary Formula 1 standards. This will include a new two-way underpass, a reconstruction of the curbs and complete repaving of the track and pit lane. And more work on the Monza Autodrome will come even further down the road, starting with an almost total reconstruction of the grandstands.
"The Autodromo di Monza represents a calling card for Italy in the world,” said Stefano Domenicali, president of Formula 1. This historic circuit attracts many spectators, but above all important investments in the territory. Therefore; it is vital that it always respects the highest possible standards of comfort and safety".
