Kooyong Classic: Matteo Berrettini also to start with Jannik Sinner
Not only Jannik Sinner: Matteo Berrettini will also be at the start of the Kooyong Classic, a traditional exhibition tournament that is staged on the courts that hosted the Australian Open until 1987 and precedes precisely the Australian Slam, kicking off with the main draw from Monday, January 15 in Melbourne Park.
Announcing the Roman tennis player’s presence were the organizers of the exhibition tournament themselves, scheduled for Jan. 10-12. "Berrettini confirmed for the Kooyong Classic 2024! The Italian joins a large group ahead of final preparations for the AO" reads the tweet posted on the Kooyong Classic's official account.
Sinner will have the honor of opening the 2024 edition of the Kooyong Classic. The South Tyrolean, in fact, will challenge Marc Polmans, an Australian of South African descent currently number 116 in the ATP rankings, on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. local time, 1 a.m. in Italy. The first day s program includes other illustrious challenges, including that between Andy Murray and Marin Cilic and that between Holger Rune and Karen Khachanov.
Berrettini, who will not take the court on the first day, will likely be engaged in the second day, Thursday, Jan. 11, whose order of play has yet to be determined.
