Italy-Canada 3-0

On a Canadian afternoon, De Giorgi’s Italy beat Canada 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) in the first of two friendly matches in preparation for week 2 of the Volleyball Nations League scheduled in Ottawa June 4-9, which will see the Azzurri face France, USA, Cuba and Holland. In the first of the two test matches, De Giorgi gave space to those who found less space in week 1, sending Sbertoli and Bovolenta on the court practically for the entire duration of the match in diagonal, Sanguinetti and Anzani in center, Recine and Porro (who took over for Lavia during the match), and Laurenzano libero. Good performance by the Azzurri with Bovolenta scoring 13 personal points. At the end of the match, Italy won the other two sets agreed by Sammelvuo and De Giorgi, with scores of 25-18 and 15-6.
Tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Italian time) will be repeated again at the “Men’s Volleyball Centre” in Gatineau. 

De Giorgi opts to give space to those who have played less so far, fielding Sbertoli and Bovolenta on the diagonal, Recine and Lavia setters, Anzani and Sanguinetti center and Laurenzano libero. Italy got off to a good start immediately on offense, leading 8-1. Canada tries to contain the Azzurri at the wall, Hoag scoring for the fourth Canadian point with Italy six lengths behind. The home team tries to shorten the lead also taking advantage of some Azzurri errors, Italy leads 17-11. Canada comes closer, 19-18, on court Giannelli and Romanò a Lavia invasion at the net brings Canada to parity; 19-19, a ball at the net by the same Lavia brings Canada ahead 21-20, a lead that becomes 22-21 with Hoag’s ace. Recine signs the point of 24-23, first set ball for Italy, set closed by a wall of Recine 25-23. 

In the second set De Giorgi confirms the same 6+1 from the beginning of the first set on the court. Canada starts well right away, taking a 7-4 lead. Sanguinetti’s wall on Hoag brings Italy within one length of the Canadians 7-6. Canada keeps the lead at one, 11-10. Anzani’s first half is worth 13-13, the Italian lead comes with an ace by Lavia 14-13. De Giorgi changes the diagonal sending in Romanò and Giannelli, Italy ahead 20-17. Italy closes the second set 25-10 with a service error by Wassenaar Ketrzynski. 

Porro on court for Lavia in the third set, this the novelty’compared to the previous sets. The 2-1 for Italy bears the signature of the Ligurian setter, Bovolenta’s tight diagonal is worth 5-2. Italy manages the lead, Wassenaar Ketrzynski scoring for Canada’s sixth point, 9-6. Sanguinetti’s ace brings the Azzurri to 17-12. Bovolenta’s wall brings Italy to 20-16, diagonal change, in Romanò serving for Anzani. Laurenzano’s defense allows the Azzurri replay closed by Bovolenta’s winning parallel for the first match ball 24-18, set and match closed on 25-19 with a Canada service error.
