F1: Russell on pole in Canada: ‘We will attack’
Second career pole for British driver
Qualifying with many twists and turns in Montreal, home of the Canadian GP. Mercedes, after bringing important updates to Monte Carlo, finds the right set-up and, with Russell, confirms it can finally fight for victory. The Briton flew in qualifying. Hamilton è missed only in Q3.
In Q3 è battle with no holds barred. Russell stopped the clock on 1'12"000. A great performance that Verstappen tries to improve but his final time è exactly the same, to the thousandth, as the McLaren driver who, having done it first, gives himself pole position in Montreal, the second, ever, of his career.
Following the front row, occupied by Russell and Verstappen, were the two McLarens of Norris and Piastri, both very fast on the track. Ricciardo’s fifth time was excellent. Probably could have done better Hamilton who, in Q3, fails to be as tento fast as in previous sessions.
Russell enjoys it, happy to finally have a competitive Mercedes that canò aim for victory: "I am really happy. Already in Monaco we saw that something had managed to turn from the beginning of the season, the great work done by the team has allowed us to be here now, which è exciting. Verstappen? We will try to keep him behind. We will attack", his words in the post qualifying.
