Mats Hummels says goodbye to Borussia Dortmund, possible landing in a Serie A big
Mats Hummels after 13 years is leaving Borussia Dortmund. "Dear fans, my time in yellow and black is coming to an end after more than 13 years. È it has been a great honor and joy for me to have played for BVB for so long", said Hummels, quoted in the club’s press release.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who played alongside Hummels at the club, said BVB loses "undoubtedly an outstanding personality" describing the defender as "one of the last of his kind in football".
In his two stints in Dortmund, interspersed with three seasons at Bayern Munich between 2016 and 2019, the 35-year-old won two German championships and two German Cups, also reaching the Champions League final in 2013 and 2024; in the latter edition he was also named in the Uefa team of the season.
Hummels – world champion with Germany in 2014 – said he would like to continue playing, preferring a move to another German or European club to be near his son, who lives in Munich. According to German media, he has reportedly attracted the interest of AC Milan.
Hummels’ departure comes a day after Dortmund coach Edin Terzic made a surprise announcement that he would leave the club, just two weeks after leading it to the Champions League final. Another Dortmund veteran, striker Marco Reus, also announced he will leave the club at the end of this season.
