Lautaro Martinez in goal, Argentina gets off to a good start in Copa America
Argentina-Canada 2-0
Argentina won (even without fully convincing) its first match in Copa America 2024. Messi (starter) and teammates beat Canada 2-0, but in the first half the North Americans held their own against their emblazoned rivals despite a shadowy Buchanan.
Unlocking the result è was Julian Alvarez who had not scored in a year and a half, i.e., since the World Cup semifinals against Croatia (Dec. 13, 2022). Lautaro Martinez, who took over with a quarter of an hour to go, sealed the score at 87'. Between the two tips of the albiceleste è so it ended 1-1 in terms of goals and it will be interesting to see who will be deployed against Chile.
Messi did not make his mark but achieved yet another record: with 35 appearances, he è became the all-time record holder for number of matches in the Copa America (in seven editions). He surpassed Chilean Sergio Livingstone, on the field in the 1940s and 1950s (1941-1954).
