Gerry Cardinale speaks out to Milan fans
Cardinal’s words
Gerry Cardinale spoke from New York on the occasion of the 'Day of Italian Sport in the World': "In the U.S. who spends the money to buy teams è the owner of the team. In Italy I have never seen anything like that, I think the fans think that they own the team, and we have to work to satisfy that concept, but they don't spend; like in Arabia".
"My message to the fans doesn't seem to be working, so I won't give any more until we win so much è the only thing that matters. We will still do everything we can to win, but in a smart way. If we do that, we will be long-lived and contribute to the growth of the Italian football ecosystem".
"When we bought the club è it was to bring to Italy what we do for a living. We have a much bigger strategy than what we play every week in Italy where it only matters to win games. I wear multiple fan hats when I look at Serie A: the Milan one, the Serie A one and the Italy one. One of the things I would like to do as a Milan administrator and as a Serie A participant è work with it and all the members of the Italian ecosystem to bring Italy back to what it was in terms of global European soccer. I think this is fundamental. I see the A as one of Italy’s greatest exports. It can’t be done, though, if we focus only on winning games. We can’t do it if we don’t innovate, if we don’t change this paradigm throughout European soccer, where there seems to be this implicit notion that you have to spend whatever it takes to win, as if there is a direct correlation between spending and winning".
